Some Highlights of 2024

Exciting News: I recently signed a contract for a new book on teaching writing. The book will be published by Corwin. Details to follow.

July 29 through August 2 Georgia Heard and I ran The Quoddy Writing Retreat for Teacher Renewal. The retreat took place in Lubec, Maine. 27 passionate writers joined us, and it was a rousing success. We have scheduled two Quoddy Writing Retreats for summer 2025. See flyer or contact me for more information. Last year’s retreat filled quickly, so don’t wait if you’re interested.

Georgia and I have been running “Write Bites,” a series of 45 minute Zoom sessions designed to get you writing. In 2025 we will be running Write Bites again: Jan. 29, Feb. 13, and March 13. You can sign up at https://www.georgiaheard.com/the-poets-studio.

A 5th grade teacher and her students from the KLA school in Miami Florida created a theatrical version of my book Flying Solo. On Nov. 19 I flew down to watch the play…and even got to read a few lines! Kudos go to Amy Crehore and her kids for a spectacular production. Amazing to see my story come alive like that!

In November I attended the NCTE Conference in Boston. On Nov. 22 I presented on “A Deep Dive Into Mentor Texts” with Carl Anderson, Sharon Hill, and Emily Callahan. It was great reconnecting with friends from all over the world.

I did several amazing photo trips in 2024, including a landscape photography trip to a remote part of southern Utah. I also went to Stewart Island in British Colombia to photograph eagles. This year I’m looking forward to photo trips to  Morro Bay, California, Newfoundland, and Brazil.
